What is Vedic Agriculture?
Veda is a Sanskrit term and means Knowledge. Vedic agriculture means complete
knowledge of natural law from seed to seed packaging. Natural law refers to all
the laws of nature discovered by modern science. Vedic agriculture is the time
tested and time honored agricultural practice mentioned in Rig Veda, Manusmriti,
Agripurana and Vriksha Ayurveda.
The concept of Vedic agriculture is based on the unique philosophy of harmony
with nature i.e. utilizing the five basic elements of earth, water, fire, air
and ether in agriculture, and recycling matter.
In plants and animals, a divine relationship exists between matter and energy. Matter
nourishes and energy protects.
Importance of the five elements
Prithvi (Earth) controls root
functions, extraction of nutrients, and development of different plant parts.
Roots and stems of the plants involve the earth element.
Jala (Water) transports nutrients in
plants. Leaves, veins and petioles of the plants involve the water element.
Teja (Fire) takes care of
photosynthesis and metabolism activity in plants. Seeds and fruits involve the
fire element.
Vayu (Air) controls respiration of
plants. The leaves involve the air element.
Akash (Ether) is the most helpful in
performing the above functions. The first four elements are directly involved
with the plants. But the ether element is linked with the plants through
healing and chanting of meditative and energizing music .
Vedic agriculture vs. Organic farming
Vedic agriculture like organic farming is a production system which avoids or
largely excludes the use of synthetically compounded fertilizers, pesticides,
growth regulators and livestock feed additives. To the maximum extent feasible,
It relies upon crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures, legumes, mineral
bearing rocks and aspects of biological pest control to maintain soil
productivity, to supply plant nutrients and to control the proliferation of
insects weeds and other pests. But in organic farming, only four elements (i.e.
soil, water, fire and air) are used to cultivate plants, whereas in Vedic
agriculture, the fifth element i.e., ether, is also harnessed through
continuous chanting of mantras. Crop health is maintained and assured through
the positive energy of healing music.
Benefits of Vedic agriculture
Avoidance of chemical pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
Usage of organic farming, biological farming, natural farming, vermi culture,
alternate agriculture and ecological agricultural systems, with crop rotation.
Reduced cost of cultivation with optimum yield.
Bio intensive nutrient management
Ecological pest management
Neem for pest control
Reduced purchase price for consumers as a result of natural source of pesticide
and fertilizers.
Above all, complete harmony with nature and Cosmic Consciousness
The Nithyanananda Vedic Agriculture System (NVAS)
In NVAS, crops are subject to continuous healing and meditation music. Ananda
Kirtans - meditative melodies from Nithyananda Kirtanalaya, the music
wing of the Foundation, are played in the farm fields, thereby generating
positive vibrations, healing energy, and creating an atmosphere of Divinity
impregnated with the Cosmic Consciousness for healthy crop growth and abundant
yield.
Further, Nithya Spiritual healers, initiated into the Nithya Spiritual Healing
system, a system of energy healing founded by Nithyananda, regularly visit the
farm fields and radiate healing energy to the crops.
NVAS prevails in increasing number of areas in South India including
Thiruvannamalai, Chitoor, Pudukottai, Musuri and the Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam
ashram in Bangalore. Paddy, grams and pulses and jaggery are currently
cultivated. A wide range of crops are already being planned. Products of NVAS
are sold through the Nithyananda Multipurpose Society, a
co-operative society of the Foundation in Tamilnadu, South India.
Educating Society
NVAS continuously educates the farmers and rural residents in villages and
agricultural zones on Vedic agriculture. Farmers are made to see tangible
benefits in employing Vedic agriculture in their own fields. Increasing numbers
of farmers are employing Ananda Kirtans in their farms and enjoying
the benefits at a holistic level.
